In Medieval times noblemen and landowners would hire the services of knights to protect their lands and belongings. Knights were men who specialised in combat, trained frequently and participated in tournaments. During times of war noblemen would be required to provide fighting men to the King and trained knights would be worth several ordinary infantrymen. Knights trained in many disciplines including hand to hand combat and mounted combat. Mounted knights were amongst the most feared warriors of their time and were the equivalent of modern day tanks. Heavily armoured, most armies cowered as knights on horseback charged towards them. Robert the Bruce and his brother Edward were highly trained fighters and took part in many tournaments. In his prime Robert was ranked amongst the top three tournament competitors in Europe. Robert's skills in combat earned him the respect of his men and served him well in his encounter with Sir Henry de Bohun at the battle of Bannockburn.
