St Andrews

St Andrews is the Home of Golf and was once the Ecclesiastical Capital of Scotland. Legend has it that St Rule, who was the bearer of the relics of St Andrew, was shipwrecked on the North East coast of Fife. He founded a church which later became the largest cathedral in Scotland. The ruins of the cathedral are open to the public and the site is run by Historic Scotland. The energetic can climb to the top of St Rules Tower to enjoy a panoramic vista over the rooftops of St Andrews.

St Andrews - the home of golf

St Andrews is, of course, renouned as the golfing mecca of the world. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews is the world authority on golf and lays down the rules and regulations of the game. As well as the famous 'Old Course' at St Andrews, there are several other links courses nearby, and a number of top class golf courses used for qualifying for the Open Championship are located only a few miles away.

St Salvators College

St Andrews is Scotland's oldest university town - it's university ranks amongst the finest in Britain, indeed, Prince William, son of The Prince of Wales and Princess Diana has chosen St Andrews university for his studies. Many of the finest buildings in the town are related to the university, including St Salvator's and St Mary's colleges.

Visitors can learn about the history of golf at the British Golf Museum, or explore Scottish history at the cathedral or St Andrews castle. The castle, set high on the cliffs at St Andrews was once the scene of a seige. In an attempt to escape, the castle's occupants dug a tunnel under the walls. Visitors to the castle can explore the eerie tunnel and also see the castle's 'inescapable' bottle dungeon.

For the more sedate visitor the town boasts a beautiful botanic garden, several parks and miles of sandy beach.

Not for the faint hearted is the St Andrews Ghost Walk - a guided walking tour of St Andrews, exploring the haunts of some of St Andrews more restless spirits.
