Local history and traditions from Fife's past

Dunfermline's ancient walkway

Local historians, Fife Council, and heritage groups are keen to preserve an ancient walkway beneath Dunfermline's city centre that may date back to the 13th century.

'Monks Passage' or 'Between the Waas' as it is known runs from the cellars of St Margarets Hotel for around 30 metres towards the Abbey.

Described as a 'snapshot of medieval life' the ancient vennel has been known about for a number of years, but local historians have only recently begun negotiations with Historic Scotland to carry out excavations at the site. Local councillors are believed to have visited the site, and the history department of Edinburgh University have also taken an interest in the ancient walkway.
