Auchtermuchty
Once famous for it's hand-looms and thatched cottages, Auchtermuchty is now better known as the real life 'Tannochbrae' - the setting for the 'Doctor Finlay' television series. Visitors can stop off at the 'Tannochbrae Tearoom' and imagine they have been transported back to a bygone age. Auchtermuchty is also known as the home town of the world famous accordianist Jimmy Shand, who reached the top 20 with his record 'The Bluebell Polka'. Scottish pop group The Proclaimers also hail from Auchtermuchty - they had a string of hits in the late 80's / early 90's including 'Letter from America', a lament for the dying heavy industry of Scotland.
The quiet minor roads of North Fife are popular with cyclists and cycling clubs, so much so that Auchtermuchty has it's own 'Cycle Tavern', complete with bike racks outside. The Kingdom of Fife Cycleways pass through the town and an Information Point stands outside the tavern, indicating nearby cycle routes and places of interest. |
Fife Facts Several locations in Fife have featured in the movies. Scenes from 'Chariots of Fire' were filmed at St Andrews and East Wemyss, and 'The Winter Guest' was filmed around the East Neuk. |
