Inchcolm Island

Sometimes referred to as the 'Iona of the East'. Inchcolm provided a safe haven for Alexander I during a storm in 1123.

A hermit who lived on the island welcomed the King into his home and in thanks for his safe delivery from the storm, Alexander vowed to found a priory in the honour of St Columba.

Much of the early priory is now in ruins, however the later Chapter House and Scriptorium remain.

Trips to the island run during the summer months from South Queensferry and occasionally from other ports on the river Forth.

Ravenscraig castle at Kirkcaldy was one of the first castles designed to be defended by artillery. The castle can still be visited today.
